Learning Democracy

Starting in October 2004, ALPE in partnership with the Eurasia Foundation is carrying out a project "Learning Democracy".

The goal of the project is to support development of civil society in Georgia and also include those regions that are mostly populated by ethnic minorities. The target group of the project comprises students of the middle and upper classes. At the first stage of the project, ALPE representatives plan to organize regular meetings in schools of Kvemo Kartli, Akhalgori, Samtskhe Javakheti regions and also in Tbilisi non-Georgian schools.

Pupils will receive publications and brochures on legal and civil society issues. At the second stage of the project, educational trips to the Parliament of Georgia, Supreme Court, and Ombudsman's Office will be organized.

A weekly round table for 10 th and 11 th graders will be held on such topics as are: education reform and education perspectives in Georgia , human rights and liberties, military service, governance and self-governance, importance of non-governmental sector and practice of non-governmental organisations.

Topics to be discussed at these meetings will be tailored for each specific group based on the information received from the special questionnaire distributed in the regions by the representatives of the foundation.
